A First-Timer's Guide to the Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg in one trip — what to see, when to go, and how to make the most of every day.

The Kashmir Valley is the perfect introduction to the Himalayas — a compact circuit of lakes, meadows and pine valleys all within a few hours' drive of Srinagar.

Start in Srinagar, where Dal Lake houseboats, Shikara rides and the Mughal gardens set a gentle pace. Give yourself a day or two to settle in before heading out to the hill resorts.

Gulmarg is famous for its Gondola — one of the highest cable cars in the world — and rolling meadows that turn to snow in winter. Pahalgam, an hour from the saffron fields of Pampore, rewards you with the Betaab and Aru valleys.

Finish with a day trip to Sonamarg, the 'Meadow of Gold', where a short trek or pony ride takes you to the Thajiwas Glacier. Shop for Pashmina and walnut wood before you fly home.
